O presente decreto-lei define e regulamenta o regime jurídico de protecção nas eventualidades invalidez e velhice do regime geral de segurança social, adiante designado por regime geral.
A protecção prevista no presente decreto-lei tem por objectivo compensar a perda de remunerações de trabalho motivada pela ocorrência das eventualidades referidas no número anterior.

The present law defines and regulates the legal regime of protection in case of disability and old age of the general social security scheme, hereinafter general scheme.
The protection provided for in present decree law is intended to compensate the loss of work remuneration caused by the occurrence of contingencies referred in the previous paragraph.
